Mousley and Bethell among new names as England signal end of white-ball eras

England have named five uncapped players in the squads for the T20 and ODI series against Australia next month, but signalled the end of an era with the World Cup winners Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali left out of the squads.
The Warwickshire pair of Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley, Leicestershire seamer Josh Hull, Hampshire fast bowler John Turner and Essex batter Jordan Cox are the five new names in the T20 squad, with Turner, Bethell and Hull – who was on Sunday added to the England squad for the second Test against Sri Lanka – is also in the one-day squad.
Joe Root is rested from the ODI squad while his Test teammates Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Matthew Potts and Jamie Smith have been picked alongside Brydon Carse, who returns after completing his three-month suspension from all cricket for placing bets on a variety of cricket matches.
The three-match T20 series, the first since Matthew Mott was sacked as head coach, begins at Southampton on 11 September before games in Cardiff and at Old Trafford, with the first of five ODIs at Trent Bridge on 19 September and the series ending at Gloucestershire’s Seat Unique Stadium on 29 September. Marcus Trescothick will oversee the team on an interim basis for the two series.
